“The scenes depicted here-- whose lives begin in the nature with which the artist surrounds herself, then are allowed to evolve on the canvas into unique landscapes of her imagining-- are familiar-but-not-quite, in a way that roots deeply in the imagination, forcing it to make connections and assemblings of its own. They make me feel like I remember them--which is to say they give me an opportunity to study how memory makes itself. They are in a way a study in deja vu, or the way that the imagination creates forms & stories in the constellations.”

Whitney Cleary is a self-taught artist from South Hadley, Massachusetts. Her work captures the quiet drama of nature through moody, atmospheric oil landscapes. Now based on Martha’s Vineyard, where she has lived for the past 13 years, Cleary draws inspiration from the island’s landscape and the lives that exist within.

Her work explores the tension between the outward joy of idyllic coastal life and the quieter, often unspoken emotional undercurrents that persist beneath the surface, suggesting that even in paradise shadows remain.

When not painting, Cleary works part time as a bread baker at Pie Chicks in Vineyard Haven, MA and also as a member of the sales team at Granary Gallery in her current home town of West Tisbury.
